Penalty hero Henderson reacts after winning Community Shield
His two huge saves in the penalty shoot-out helped the Eagles secure a first-ever Community Shield at Wembley – and Dean Henderson gave his reaction to another trophy win.
The victory came after a hard-fought 2-2 draw in regular time, with goals from Liverpool’s debutants Hugo Ekitike and Jeremy Frimpong being cancelled out by a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty and a second-half strike from Ismaila Sarr.
Once again a hero at Wembley, Henderson made two crucial saves in the shoot-out to secure the trophy. Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Henderson praised his team's resilience and tactical discipline.
He said: "These emotions are fantastic. You'd think obviously they were 2-1 up and we were out the game, but the lads stuck by it.
"The manager said we'd get a chance in the second half on transitions, we did. We stuck by it, defended great, and we deserved that in the end."
Saving penalties at Wembley has become a specialty for Henderson, whose crucial save against Manchester City in the FA Cup final helped the Eagles secure that historic trophy in May.
Two trophies in three months is incredible
—Dean Henderson
When asked about his incredible record at Wembley, Henderson’s passion was clear.
He said: "I love it, I love the big moments, I love being in that pressure moment. I really enjoyed that today, the homework we did for the penalties was great, so thanks to everyone behind the scenes that helped me with that."
Palace had never won a major trophy before the FA Cup win in May, and now Oliver Glasner's side have two trophies within 85 days.
Henderson said: "It's incredible, we turned up today, they're the favourites, they've got unbelievable players, they're a great team and we knew it would be difficult.
"We had to defend them, we had to work so hard but you know what, two trophies in three months is incredible – and let's write the next bit of history."
