Palace were frustrated for the first hour at the VBS, but Molly-Mae Sharpe's goal on the hour broke the deadlock, and the goals soon flowed in South London.

Sharpe managed to double her tally, and Annabel Blanchard and Abbie Larkin also chipped in to earn a deserved 4-0 home win.

Speaking to the media after the game, Potter talked about that earlier frustration, and what the message was at half-time.

"There was no panic. I think the players were getting a little bit frustrated with themselves, which can seep out a little bit. 

"So we just said 'we know there's some frustrations there, but it's OK. We've got 45 minutes to go. Just relax. Tighten up on your touches. Tighten up on the details.'

"I told them to move the ball, to use our whip a little bit more.

"We spoke about taking our time and just being ruthless when we create those opportunities, and that's what we did," she said.

Reflecting on her team's performance throughout the 90 minutes, Potter said: "I was really, really pleased with the desire to want to go and score.

"We've had that in little fits and starts over the season, but the continuation to push and keep sustaining attacks was really good from the team.

"Our back line was excellent in marshalling their threats, especially when you've got \[Mollie\] Lambert and \[Beth\] Hepple running at your back line, who we know are threats for them. 

"I thought we marshalled them well, so I was really pleased overall."

You can see that the team are flourishing and that they're having some really good performances all over the park.

Finally, the Manager spoke about Palace Women's excellent run in the league - and what she puts the good form down to.

"We had a conversation before Christmas, before we went on the run, and we spoke about our out-of-possession work. 

"We spent a long time trying to get it right, and you could see it took a while. 

"There were a few moments where there was hesitation, or they were just half a second off and we were getting punished with it, and we cut that out of our game. 

"I think the players have realised that what we're trying to do in our shape is working, and if we do it right and we all stick together then we're managing to really get hold of teams and push them the other way. 

"We're doing a lot of work in our structure and our shape and they've bought into it 100%, and you can see that the team are flourishing and that they're having some really good performances all over the park."

Crystal Palace Women's Manager Jo Potter gave her thoughts to the media at full-time, after she saw her side win a fifth straight game in the Barclays Women's Super League 2 with a 4-0 home win over Durham.

### Eagle-Eyed Review

Palace U21s have endured a frustrating start to the calendar year, with a lack of match action limiting momentum following defeat away to Chelsea in Premier League 2.

Fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Borussia Mönchengladbach were both postponed. The trip to Loughborough University to face Forest was called off due to significant traffic disruption across London, which severely impacted the team’s arrival time. Meanwhile, the U21s’ must-win Premier League International Cup fixture against Borussia Mönchengladbach was postponed after heavy rainfall left the pitch at the VBS Community Stadium waterlogged.

As a result, Darren Powell’s side return to competitive action in largely unchanged circumstances from recent previews.

The young Eagles currently sit 17th in the Premier League 2 table with 14 points. Under the competition’s new format, that position is enough to secure a place in the cross-cut play-offs, while Palace also remain firmly within touching distance of the top 16 – the cut-off for qualification to the elimination play-offs and the Premier League International Cup.

Just one point separates Powell’s side from Arsenal, Leeds and Brighton, who occupy the final top-16 positions, underlining just how tight the table remains at this stage of the season.

### The Opposition – Derby County

It has been a challenging campaign so far for Derby County Under-21s. The Rams currently sit at the foot of Premier League 2 Division One with five points, three adrift of Sunderland in the cross-category play-off places.

Derby had to wait until early October for their first win of the season, which came in emphatic fashion with an 8-2 victory over Bristol City. That result ended a seven-match losing run in which they conceded 19 goals and scored just six.

That confidence carried into the Premier League Cup, where Derby again recorded an impressive 8-2 home win over Bristol City at the Proctor Cars Stadium. A blistering opening spell saw the Rams four goals ahead inside 15 minutes, with Owen Eames and Cruz Allen finding the net before Cameron Wilson struck twice. Further goals from Allen and Johnson Osong completed a dominant first half, before a Justin Oguntolu brace sealed the win after the break.

In league action, Derby showed significant resilience in an entertaining 4-4 draw away to Fulham Under-21s. After conceding three goals inside the opening 10 minutes, Danny Maye’s side fought back admirably, with goals from Cameron Wilson, Johnson Osong, Lennon Wheeldon and a stoppage-time penalty from Jamie Wähling securing a valuable point.

Despite a defeat to Norwich City, Derby responded positively with a convincing 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers, continuing an encouraging run that saw them score 16 goals across four matches. Draws against Stoke City and Aston Villa followed, alongside defeats to Sheffield United and Bristol City, before a disciplined goalless draw with Aston Villa last time out.

The Rams finished 22nd in Premier League 2 last season, having ended the previous campaign bottom of the table.

The Eagles were the better side for the first 45 minutes at Selhurst Park, spurning several good opportunities before falling behind to a breakaway goal by Estêvão.

Chelsea then took the game beyond Palace – who were reduced to 10 men when Adam Wharton picked up two yellow cards – but the Eagles finished the game showing plenty of fight, and did pull a goal back through Chris Richards late on.

Henderson, wearing the captain’s armband, told Premier League Productions: “I thought we were the better team in the first-half. I thought we put them under pressure and we had some opportunities early on in the game which if we had taken, the game could be totally different.

“I thought we were the better team for the first 20 minutes of the game. We put them under a lot of pressure and created some good chances. We didn't quite put them away and then we got punished at the back half of the half, which can happen in football.

“They're the moments we talk about through the week. Obviously, going down to 10 men makes it really difficult to get back into the game, of course.

“We can't concede the second goal straight after half-time, that just can't happen. It gives them the belief then to start pressuring you more. I think the character the lads showed to the final whistle, if we could have maybe just nicked another goal or we don't concede the third, I think it gives us a chance in the game.

“There are positive signs. We’ve got players coming back in now and I think the energy this week was really, really good. Coming into this game, we expected more and obviously at this moment in time, football’s cruel sometimes. They make mistakes, we didn’t punish them. We made our mistakes and, ultimately, we got punished.”

Palace’s starting XI featured Daniel Muñoz and Ismaïla Sarr for the first time in over a month, and the duo were heavily involved down the right-hand side as they returned to Premier League action after absences through injury and the Africa Cup of Nations respectively.

Henderson noted: “Football’s a game of moments, and we didn't take our moments, they did. Obviously, you look at Ismaila Sarr coming back into the team, he's come back from AFCON and he got back in late. Dani Muñoz \[had his\] first game back after an operation.

“These things take a couple of games to click. Obviously, we've just got to keep working hard and have that belief within the group, and draw on all the experience we've got. 

“You’ve got to shut the noise out, but we know we’re a different team from what we’ve shown over the last 10 games. 

"If you actually look on paper, the team that played today is much stronger, much more experienced. We get those partnerships back together and the results will come.”

Oliver Speaks on Resillience Against Chelsea

Palace went down 3-1 to Chelsea at Selhurst Park on Sunday but were the better team in the first-half and – after going three goals and a man down early in the second-half – the final 20 minutes as well.

The defeat extended Palace’s winless run to 11 matches in all competitions, but Glasner saw positives to take from the performance.

“I think we played a really good first-half,” the Manager told his post-match press conference. “It's just right now, [we’re missing] the most important part in football: to be ruthless and take your chances and, on the other side, don't make mistakes and give the opposition easy chances.

“That's what we are doing right now. Then, we are one goal down and we make the second mistake, or just one or two or three mistakes in a row, and after 49 minutes, you are 2-0 down, when you feel you’ve played good football and you are in the game.

“Then, you can see that the nerves are not really strong right now. It's completely normal, but on the other side, what I was really pleased with, and what gives me a lot of confidence for the next weeks, is the reaction after being 3-0 down and conceding a red card. It can easily happen that you [then] lose 5 or 6-0. I think all of us have seen this in football.

“But the players really were in the game, made pressure, created chances, scored a goal. Everybody had the feeling, when the 90th minute came, if we score now another one, it could be a draw.

“This reaction from the players gives me a lot of confidence, because I have seen many good things, but it's pretty clear we have to reduce the mistakes that lead to goals and yes, we have to be more ruthless in taking our chances.”


Glasner added: “For me, there were three parts in the game: the game until the second goal. And then, I don't know, for 15-20 minutes, we lost a lot.

“After the second goal, we lost a little bit of belief. And after the third goal, conceiving the third goal, for me it was more like, ‘now we just play free;. And this will be the message: play free.

“I know it's easy to say, not so easy to do, but I think that's the only solution to see everybody in his best shape again.”

Palace lost Adam Wharton to two yellow cards in quick succession in the second-half, not longer after João Pedro’s effort had bounced off Jaydee Canvot’s leg and up onto his arm before hitting the post – leading to a VAR review, a penalty and their third goal.

“I could now easily blame the referee for a few decisions,” Glasner noted.” I think, yes, [Moises] Caicedo had two fouls in the first half, he just conceded one yellow, Adam had two fouls, he conceded two.

“I've watched back the penalty – it was first on Jaydee’s hip. We were briefed before the season, if the ball touches the body first and then goes to the hand, it's no handball. I've seen that Pedro Neto stamped on Ismaila Sarr. It should have been a red card. 

“But, to be honest, for me, it feels wrong to blame the referee for our defeat because the referee won't help us in the future and it's good that he's neutral. The only [people] who can help us is us. That's why I think it's important to talk about this.”

Glasner added of Canvot: “It's now to support him and lift him, and that's what we will do.”

Palace Women extended their league win streak to five in front of a jubliant VBS Community Stadium, as goals from Molly-Mae Sharpe, Annabel Blanchard and Abbie Larkin sealed a dominant 4-0 win at home.

The Eagles were frustrated by a resolute Durham defence for the first hour, but after Sharpe put Palace ahead on 60 minutes - the floodgates opened. 

Goals from Blanchard and Larkin as well as a second for Sharpe would follow, as Palace marked their first 2026 home game with a win.

It was goalless at the break, but Palace really should have been in front.

Kirsty Howat had a great opportunity to open her 2026 account on 20 minutes after Elise Hughes had played her in, but the Durham defence managed to scramble the ball away before she could strike it.

16 minutes later and Molly-Mae Sharpe almost scored a Goal of the Season contender, as she caught Ashleigh Weerden's corner on the volley.

Palace's record appearance maker could not keep her strike down though, and the volley whistled over the bar.

Hughes then had two great chances within two minutes but her touch let her down on both occasions.

Play resumed after the break and it looked for all the world that Howat would put Palace ahead after being put clean through on 59 minutes, but she couldn't convert her chance after rounding the goalkeeper.

The Eagles managed to edge in front just one minute later though, with Sharpe breaking the deadlock.

Weerden, who had been causing havoc on the left-wing, beat her defender and lofted a cross to the back post.

The ball landed at Sharpe's feet, and Palace's number eight took one touch and buried the ball in the bottom corner with her left foot.

It didn't take long for Palace to get the second either, as Annabel Blanchard doubled home advantage on 68 minutes.

Substitute Abbie Larkin was brought on and quickly made an impact on the game, racing down the right-wing and whipping a dangerous cross in.

Durham stopper Catriona Sheppard spilled Larkin's ball, and there was Blanchard to slam the ball home for 2-0.

Palace wouldn't stop there though, as Sharpe doubled her tally on 76 minutes.

Larkin was causing trouble in the Durham box and her effort was deflected fortuitously into Sharpe's path.

Sharpe made no mistake, and converted from close range to make it 3-0 to Palace.

Durham pushed for a goal, but Shae Yañez stood firm time and time again to claim yet another clean sheet.

With the game approaching it's end, Weerden raced through and flashed a perfect cross to the back post. 

Waiting to meet her pass was Larkin, who tapped home and added a fourth for Palace.

This result moves Palace up to fourth place in the WSL2, currently level on points with third-place Bristol City.

There was a welcome boost for Palace ahead of kick-off in the returns of Daniel Muñoz and Ismaïla Sarr to the starting XI, both players having been absent for over a month through injury and the Africa Cup of Nations respectively.

As Manager Oliver Glasner had confirmed ahead of the game, Dean Henderson took the captain’s armband following Marc Guéhi’s departure to Manchester City, with Maxence Lacroix and Will Hughes both vice-captains. Elsewhere in the backline, Chris Richards was making his 100th Palace appearance.

Following a run of 16 matches in 56 days over the winter, the Eagles had enjoyed the comparative luxury of a full week’s training in the build-up to the game – and, backed by a Selhurst Park in fantastic voice, started energetically.

The best chance of the first-half went their way inside eight minutes. With Chelsea looking to play out from the back, Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta combined to close down Benoît Badiashile – the former touching it into the path of Mateta, who was in on goal, albeit from a tight angle.

With the far post to aim for, Mateta duly placed a low finish across Robert Sánchez – but the Spain goalkeeper, to his credit, stuck his right boot out and managed to divert the ball away from goal.

Chelsea were not without their dangerous moments in the first-half either, a clear opportunity falling the way of Enzo Fernández not long after: after Marc Cucurella’s cross was only half-cleared to the Argentina international, he failed to get his foot over the bouncing ball, smashing his half-volley over the bar.

Palace continued to look sharp – one particular first-time cross from Muñoz, into the so-called ‘corridor of uncertainty’ between Sanchez and his back-line, almost found Johnson, but former Palace loanee Trevoh Chalobah managed to slide in and reach it before Brennan Johnson could.

And just before the half-hour mark, Sarr had the opportunity to open the scoring, latching onto a Richards long throw – inadvertently flicked on at the near post – but failing to direct the loose ball on target under pressure from Cucurella.

Then, on 34 minutes, Palace went behind against the run of play. After Johnson played in a free-kick from deep, and Chelsea headed clear, Jaydee Canvot’s backpass was seized onto by Estêvão on the halfway line.

The 18-year-old, ever a threat for the visitors, showed an impressive turn of pace to beat Tyrick Mitchell to it and race into the area, before slamming a finish beyond the advancing Henderson.

Palace responded by continuing to pile bodies forwards, but it was Estêvão who went closest to scoring shortly before the half-time whistle; shown on the outside by Richards, the Chelsea attacker smashed a rising finish across the face of goal.

The early stages of the second-half, sadly, belonged to Chelsea in an attacking sense, as their more efficient finishing took the game away from Palace.

Within five minutes of the restart, João Pedro doubled the visitors’ advantage, exchanging passes with Estêvão out wide, chopping in from the right and hammering a low finish beyond Henderson.

Just shy of 10 minutes later, moments after Henderson kept out Estêvão’s bending effort, Pedro ought to have scored another, capitalising on a loose punch to place a finish goalwards; the ball appeared to hit Canvot’s thigh and then arm, deflecting onto the post.

Minutes later, however, referee Darren England stopped play for a VAR review, ruling Canvot’s intervention to be handball – albeit accidental – allowing Fernandez to step up and put Chelsea out of sight from the penalty spot.

And the afternoon would worsen for Palace after Adam Wharton collected two yellow cards in quick succession, both for sliding challenges on his opposite number Moisés Caicedo.

Palace continued to plug, and Johnson hit a low effort from the edge of the box which deflected not far wide of the far post.

There were at least two bright notes for the Eagles to finish on, as young defender Chadi Riad – out for the best part of a year with a knee injury – continued his rehabilitation with an appearance off the bench, the 22-year-old’s first at senior level since 12th January last year against Stockport County.

And moments later, Riad played his part in Palace getting on the scoresheet; after Lerma’s header was clawed off the line by Sanchez, Chelsea attempted to clear, the ball hitting Riad – who was following up – and popping up for Richards to glance home a header from close range.

Nine additional minutes followed as Palace finished with fight – but ultimately defeat to Chelsea.
