**Street drinking in the areas surrounding Wembley Stadium is not permitted**, so one of our Wembley Fan Zones, or a local pub, is the best place for supporters to go to soak up the pre-match atmosphere.

**Please note that anyone without a ticket should not travel to the game**. All tickets are strictly non-transferable and are not available to distribute to other supporters.

**Please ensure, during a day of celebration, that all areas are kept clean and tidy.**

[As previously announced](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/official-palace-fan-parks-announced-for-2025-fa-cup-final/), **BOXPARK Wembley** will be the place to party ahead of the game – dedicated as a Palace-only location for matchday.

The venue will be open from **09:00 – 15:45 BST,** with tickets priced at **£10 for entry**. Pre-booked tickets are valid until 12:30. Pre-booked tickets guarantee you entry until 12:30. From 12:30 onwards, tickets can be purchased on the door on a 1 in 1 out basis.

Once inside, supporters can expect a live DJ and band; a huge variety of food and drink; interviews and appearances from Palace legends and fans; giveaways and competitions; and much, much more.

**Please note that, BOXPARK is an FA Cup Final** **match ticket only entry**. **Supporters will have to show their match ticket upon entry.** BOXPARK will not be screening the match. All those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian over the age of 25.

BOXPARK will revert to free entry after the game.

Once again, we have also been allocated the **Arena Square Fan Zone** on the West side of Wembley stadium, perfect for groups and families.

A Palace takeover is expected with a number of activities planned, including mascots Pete and Alice the Eagles; performances the Crystals cheerleaders; facepainters; music & entertainment; an inflatable goal; exclusive giveaways and even a special appearance from Phoenix the Eagle.

A legends Q&A session will also take place, while food and drinks will also be available.

Doors for the Arena Square Fan Zone open at **11:00 BST and close at 16:00.**

The Arena Square Fan Zone is free to enter, but you must present your stadium ticket for entry. You will also be subject to a bag check – stadium bag restrictions and regulations apply.

The multi-talented creative and life-long Palace fan wrote, recorded, mixed, edited and shot the video for his new tune at Selhurst Park all within the space – incredibly – of a single day.

The song – produced by Tony Bones The Producer and performed by Bailey Smith – can be streamed on [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/7usDVD6PDkEOCbHK7Elk7O), [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vstIU-FyQiI) (embedded below) – and more digital platforms now, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

Palace have enjoyed a long association with Final-themed songs, after [the 1990 squad](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/club/glad-all-over-60th-anniversary-abbey-road-mark-bright-fa-cup-final-single/) covered and performed *Glad All Over* on primetime television, while Bailey Smith also masterminded an unofficial 2016 Final track, *Glad All Over Again.*

*OMG (One More Game)* is another celebration of what it has meant to follow the Eagles in this season’s competition – and Palace’s hopes for Saturday’s game.

“I love the competition so dearly,” Bailey Smith told [cpfc.co.uk](http://cpfc.co.uk). “There's so much nostalgia attached to it. When I was a kid there were always FA Cup Final songs – often sort of cheesy, but fun and lovable.

“I always had a temptation to do one if we ever got there, and obviously we did in 2016. The conduit for that was the producer of the track – he was a Palace fan, he got in contact with me, and that's how that came about.

“That also sort of started my relationship with the club, actually, because they played it at Wembley and Steve Parish invited me – but being a fan I already had a ticket! I’ve been close to the club ever since.

“This one really was not gonna happen, because first of all, I didn’t want to jinx us – last time I did it, we lost! Secondly, everybody that I bumped into at the semi-final, every single Palace fan I met was like: ‘you’ve gotta do a song now, we’ve beaten Aston Villa’ – so that was another turn-off! I was like, ‘everyone wants it, so I'm not gonna do it!’”

But out of nowhere, Bailey Smith felt that draw again. 

Whilst preparing some demos for a job with Craig David, the Palace man was listening to some Garage tracks in his inbox from another producer he’d worked with – and: “One of them I just really thought would fit as a storytelling rap… 

"I just had a bit of downtime last Wednesday, and I thought: ‘oh, you know what, screw it, I'll have a go.’

“I had a few lyrics bouncing around my head, particularly the Jean-Philippe Mateta line – I had that in my head for ages – and I was like: ‘let’s just start with that and see where it goes.’”

I wanted it to be more real, and more in tune with the heart of Palace.

Where it went was *OMG (One More Game)*, which recognises that Palace – although underdogs heading into the Final against Pep Guardiola’s City – can beat anyone on their day.

“I wanted it to be a bit more sort of melancholy,” Bailey Smith explains. “You know, not so much ‘hey, we're gonna win!’ because I'm not one hundred percent sure if we are or not! I wanted it to be more real, and more in tune with the heart of Palace.

“It started sort of writing itself, and by the time I got to the end, I thought it was really good! But I didn’t have any time – I couldn’t just put it out, I needed time to mix it, and visuals…

"At first, I thought I’d get it mixed remotely, and then just video myself in my office performing it – although that would’ve been a bit rubbish!”

Where else other to perform it than SE25? One quick email to [Palace for Life Foundation](https://www.palaceforlife.org/) – whom he had been collaborating with on a separate project – and Bailey Smith laughed: “Within hours, I was in the changing rooms at Selhurst Park, shooting this video, directing it on the hoof!

“I brought all my old shirts with me, had the idea of doing that sort of jump cut thing, where I have different shirts on in different seats. And it all just came together – we shot the whole thing in a couple of hours, and we edited it in the offices of Palace for Life straight afterwards, and released it on Instagram that evening!

“So it was written, recorded, mixed, edited, shot, visuals edited and released all within 24 hours. I'm fairly proud of it!”

One listen, and we were hooked – but a song lives and dies on its popular reception, so what’s the response been like from the Palace community?

“Insane!” Bailey Smith says – that man Mateta himself agrees, having commented star-struck emojis over the rapper’s most recent post (above).

“It's been the biggest reaction I've had on any of the little things I've done for years, I'd say, so it’s really nice to have that connection.

“The reaction has been so positive, and I think it's because I've not been too bullish. I think it's a bit more Palace just to be like: ‘hey, you know what? You never know what’ll happen. There’s always a chance. There’s always hope.’

“But good lord, if we win it... I don't even want to think about it, really, because if we win, like, I just don't know I’d do with myself. It’s just too much, it’s just such a mad thing to think about!

“The frustrating thing is, whatever happens on Saturday, it’s going to be really emotional – and I’ve just got to gear myself up for that.

“The one guarantee we’ve all got – the absolute guarantee – is that it’s going to be emotional. 

"It’s going to be intensely, intensely emotional.”

Crystal Palace’s third-ever FA Cup Final is just days away now – and ahead of the showpiece event at Wembley, Palace for Life patron Ben Bailey Smith (Doc Brown) has released a new song entitled ‘OMG (One More Game).’

The Eagles, a short time after emerging from administration, had been put on the brink of a place in the Premier League promised land by a precociously talented 21-year-old who grew up a stone’s throw from the Holmesdale Road End.

Bill Leslie was behind the mic on that occasion, and remembers the tie fondly. To understand the significance of that 2-0 play-offs victory, Leslie takes us back to the first-leg: “Thinking back to the semi-finals, Brighton were the overwhelming favourites going into it, particularly after the goalless draw at Selhurst Park in the first leg. Everyone expected a fairly routine Brighton win.

“I think it was just a couple months earlier they played in the league and Brighton had won pretty comfortably. I seem to remember the lie of the land was that getting that goalless draw in the first-leg Brighton almost had a free pass.”

The significance of manager Ian Holloway’s impact cannot be downplayed either, with Leslie saying certain events pre-match “served to fire \[him\] up and it actually had a big bearing on the game in the end, because Palace had even more of a siege mentality."

In typical Palace fashion, coming into the game as underdogs simply spurred them on: “I seem to remember Brighton hit the crossbar, they had a few good chances and then when Zaha got the first goal, you thought: ‘Here we go, this is actually going to happen – the underdog is going to have its day.’

“For all the good football \[Brighton\] played that season under Gus Poyet, I don’t think they were very good at coming from behind. So once the first goal went in you thought: ‘Oh it really is in Palace’s favour.’ The second goal – that’s sort of the moment with the timing of it, the nature of it, you just think that’s that.”

Commentator

When Zaha got the first goal, you thought: ‘Here we go, this is actually going to happen – the underdog is going to have its day.’

The first goal paved the way for Zaha to etch his way into the folklore of the club with the second goal – giving us the ‘Zaha, oh yes!’ moment. “When he struck that second one, the feeling I had, which I’m sure every Palace fan had, was that that was the moment he’d taken care of business. So the ‘oh yes!’ just reflected: tick that box - ‘great goal,’ tick that box - ‘through to Wembley,’ tick that box - ‘main man standing up and doing the job.’”

The Eagles progressed through to the final to face Watford, which Leslie also commentated on: “After the semi-final, I did the final as well and although it wasn’t a great game, Palace did exactly what they had to do because Watford again were the favourites, the flair team.

“But the way that Palace played: they played the game not the occasion. Watford froze and it was a lovely moment when Kevin Phillips got that penalty and it was another turning point in Palace’s history.”

Reaching the play-off final was the culmination of Palace’s three-year resurgence. More recently, Leslie has been involved in further Palace matches that live long in the memory, such as the 2-1 smash-and-grab against Brighton in February, 2021.

“I think that would go right up there with the most extraordinary games that I’ve done recently, certainly involving Crystal Palace, because it was impossible that they didn’t lose that game. It was even more impossible that they actually won it, and it summed up in one night why we all love football, because the most extraordinary story unfolded that no one watching could have foreseen.”

Both the last-minute and play-off victory took place at the American Express Community Stadium, however Leslie is no stranger to Selhurst Park either: “Selhurst Park, like all the Premier League grounds, is a lot better than it was in terms of scrambling up ladders and getting up onto the gantry.

“There are stairs rather than ladders, because of the growth of the Premier League as an international brand you have more interest and you need to accommodate more broadcasters. It’s all pretty good, the view’s pretty good. When the fans are in, it’s still one of the most lively and most enjoyable atmospheres”

With matches happening on an almost daily basis, the intricacies and work that goes into commentary are often overlooked. It could even be considered an art form for commentators to go from one game to another and deliver a consistent performance.

“There are ways that people do it that are different so to that extent you can say that there’s creativity within it, but ultimately everyone’s after the same thing which is, on radio: find the right words to describe what you’re seeing, and television: to find the right words that make the picture better.

“Is it an art form? If you have a painting on the wall, some people are going to think it’s amazing, some people are going to hate it, some people are going to say it’s done really badly. Everyone will have a view on it, because of the very nature of art and I guess that it’s an art form in a respect that there is no perfect commentary.”

You can be sure that, after that night on the south coast, a number of Palace fans may disagree.

‘Zaha – OH YES!’ There can’t be many more iconic lines of commentary in Palace’s modern day history - and this one took place exactly 12 years ago today (13 May).

A legendary figure among fans of both clubs, Byrne was born in West Horsley in Surrey and lived in South Norwood.

As is so often the case for bright footballing talents, Byrne proved a late bloomer at youth level, having represented amateur sides Epsom Town and Guildford City Youth until shortly before his 16th birthday.

His potential was identified by his schoolteacher Vincent Blore, perchance also a former Palace and West Ham player, but Byrne reputedly required four trials with the Eagles before manager Cyril Spiers was fully convinced of his talents.

After representing Palace in the 1955/56 and '56/57 FA Youth Cups, impressing enough to be selected for England’s youth sides, Byrne signed his first professional contract on his 17th birthday – **on this day (13th) in May 1956.**

He went on to make his professional debut for the club five months later following an injury to Mike Deakin, and while the goals did not initially flow for Palace’s hot prospect – Byrne scored just seven times in 28 appearances in 57/58 – those numbers soon picked up as the forward developed his trademark confidence and swagger on the ball.

A mere 1.7 metres tall, Byrne’s stocky figure and quick feet made him a popular figure among Palace supporters, with many enjoying the entertainment of his consummate class, while he earned the nickname “Budgie” due to his talkative nature on the field.

A deep-lying centre forward before the position became widely adopted, Byrne’s hold-up play, close control and eye for a long ball made him not only a prolific goalscorer but also a valuable creator for his teammates.

As Byrne’s confidence grew, so too did his influence on the field: after scoring 17 and 16 times in respective seasons in the Fourth Division with the then-Glaziers – including a brace in Palace’s club-record 9-0 victory over Barrow – his best campaign yet earned him international recognition.

In 1960/61, not only did Byrne net 30 of Palace’s 110 goals as Arthur Rowe’s side won promotion - a post-war record for the club, matched only by Glenn Murray in 2012/13 - but Byrne became the first Fourth Division player to win a cap for England’s Under-23s, featuring against Wales in a 2-0 win in February 1961. He would play twice more for the side over the subsequent month, scoring once.

Here was a young player at the peak of his talents. In his biography of Byrne, 'Burn Budgie Byrne - Football Inferno', Brian Belton writes: “His gifts were rare and real and it is likely that no better player has worn the claret and blue of Crystal Palace.”

Byrne's sustained success in the red and blue prompted a full England call-up by manager Walter Winterbottom in November 1961, with the inside-left playing the whole of a 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland – one of only five post-war players to feature for England despite playing outside the top two divisions.

Other clubs soon came calling, however, with Byrne moving to West Ham in early 1962 for a reported £65,000 and forward Ron Brett – then a record British transfer fee for a Third Division player – following protracted negotiations with Hammers’ boss Ron Greenwood, who described him as “the English Di Stefano.”

In east London for five years, Byrne would win the FA Cup (scoring the winning goal in 1964) and European Cup Winners’ Cup (in 1965) and – on an individual basis – even once beat out the late, great Bobby Moore to the club’s Player of the Year award.

Byrne’s form for West Ham would sadly begin to tail as injuries took hold and Sir Geoff Hurst grew in prominence, and despite his outstanding talent, the forward would win just 11 caps for his country, narrowly missing out on a place in England’s 1966 FIFA World Cup-winning squad.

And so to 15th February, 1967, when a plan to return to Palace for a fee of £45,000 was sealed. His first appearance was in a Friendly at Selhurst Park the following evening.

With the Glaziers in the Second Division at this point, Byrne would score six times further in the subsequent two seasons, taking his total in red and blue to 101 goals in 259 appearances.

After just over a year further with Palace, Byrne moved to Fulham for a further season in west London - coincidentally transferred as the two sides travelled back to the capital on a train from Manchester.

He went on to sign for Durban City in South Africa, where he would conclude his playing career before moving into management.

Byrne tragically passed away in 1999 at the tender age of 60, but memories still abound of the young, local, genial talent who excelled for clubs across the capital, and indeed for England, on a variety of stages.

It was Byrne’s destiny to do so, after all.

Football often possesses a funny habit of reuniting old friends, as proved to be the case when Johnny Byrne returned to Crystal Palace from West Ham United in February 1967.

**Today, we hear from former Palace legend James McArthur, who made 253 appearances for the club across nine years – including three matches at Wembley in the FA Cup.**

Macca's first Wembley appearance for Palace was as a second-half substitute in our 2-1 semi-final win over Watford in 2015/16. He subsequently played the full 120 minutes of our defeat to Manchester United in the Final.

The midfielder's third and final time playing at Wembley with Palace was when he captained the club in our 2021/22 semi-final defeat to Chelsea – but thankfully, he has since experienced a happier day in North-West London with the Eagles.

"The semi-final was a very, very good day," McArthur wrote in his latest [programme column](https://shop.cpfc.co.uk/giftssouvenirs/souvenirs/programmes/?_ga=2.199665390.1746881168.1744564593-137447861.1689949595). "It was actually the first Palace game I’ve been back to, and it was a really nice feeling.

"Obviously, it was a massive game for the club to be part of. It was really, really exciting and lovely, to be honest. [I went to the Fanzone](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/club/list-of-palace-designated-pubs-fan-zones-near-wembley-for-fa-cup-final/) before kick-off and spoke to lots of fans, which was so nice. 

"Being based away from London, it’s obviously tough to get down. Being honest, I’ve probably not missed being away from football so much, but when I was back, seeing all the fans, being there to support all the lads, it was such a nice feeling – and obviously I’m going to try and take in a good few more games this year and next year.

"As for the game, I think the start of it was probably a bit cagey, no team really wanting to make any mistakes. 

"When you play against Aston Villa, you need to get that first goal, because if you don’t, and they get it, then they are so patient with the ball and they force you into coming out, and then they create an overload, and it makes it really difficult for you. 

"So to get that first goal was brilliant for the lads – and from there, I thought they were outstanding. 

"It was up there with one of the best performances of the season. To perform like that in such a tough game, but also with the pressure of potentially getting to the Final, was a real plus for the players."

Reflecting on how Palace managed the occasion, McArthur noted: "I think it’s something that the manager has instilled in them: don’t get caught up by the emotions of what happens in the game, and keep doing the right things. If you've got a team who can do that, it's hard to stop them. 

"You think about the team that Manchester City have had – their run of winning four Premier League titles in a row – and you can see that they were the same: they didn’t let anything impact the way they played football. They just kept doing the right things. 

"Palace showed great character, great resilience, and great belief in each other to keep doing the right things, to go and capitalise on a team who left a lot of spaces. 

"It was an incredible win because Aston Villa, you can't get away from it, are a fantastic team, and to have the record we have had this season, against that quality of opposition, shows you how good a team Crystal Palace are.

"It shows you that, with the Palace squad just now, anyone can really come in and take their opportunity. There’s a good structure to it and the lads are playing really well."

Crystal Palace are a club which really deserves to win something. 

A firm fans' favourite in South London, McArthur knows all too well what a win would mean to the Eagles' supporter base: "Every fan naturally wants to win something, especially the FA Cup, which would be an amazing achievement for the club.

"The one thing I would say, and we were speaking about it before the game: Crystal Palace are a club which really deserves to win something.

"The fans really deserve to get that special day, and that special moment, which will be in their heads and their hearts forever.

"I'm really hoping – not just for the players and the staff and the Chairman, but also for the fans – that Palace can go one step further."

And Macca also sees plenty of positive signs for Palace, having previously defeated Manchester City in a Final – back in 2012/13, with Wigan Athletic.

"I think there will be lessons for Palace to learn from last month’s defeat to City in the league," the former midfielder writes.

"It's quite funny, because I kind of think about when I won the FA Cup with Wigan, in 2012/13… there are a lot of similarities.

"We played against Man City the month before the Final, and it was a great performance. We didn’t quite get a result – we lost 1-0 – but we learned a lot from that game.

"Then in May 2013, it was, of course, City who we beat in the Final – so with that omen, I’m hoping it’s going to be an equally special day for Crystal Palace."

'The fans deserve a special day' – Voices of Wembley: James McArthur

The 35-year-old has been a near-ever-present throughout our longest top-flight spell to date, playing a key role in many of the most important moments in modern Crystal Palace history.

Ward initially joined the club from Portsmouth at the beginning of our successful 2012/13 season in the Championship, playing a significant role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League – not least with his goal-saving intervention on the line against Watford in the play-off final at Wembley.

The following season, Ward – fulfilling a variety of roles in defence and even midfield – missed just two matches as the Eagles retained their place among the elite; won our Young Player of the Year award in 2013/14; and played every minute of Palace’s run in the 2015/16 FA Cup, including 120 minutes against Manchester United in the final.

A consistent, dependable performer in the side in the years that followed, Ward was named club captain in 2023/24, when he was hailed as “the ultimate professional” by then-manager Roy Hodgson. In April 2024, he became the first-ever Palace player to feature in 300 Premier League matches for the club.

Ward has overall played 363 matches for the Eagles – a total which places him eighth in our list of all-time appearances – and racked up 305 Premier League games in red and blue – our highest-ever total by an individual player – scoring six times for the club. He duly earned the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Contribution last season.

**Chairman Steve Parish said:** “From the very day he joined Crystal Palace, Joel has been an incredible ambassador for this Football Club: open, friendly and professional, but also competitive, driven and uncompromising in the standards he sets.

Indeed, in April 2024, Ward became the first-ever Palace player to feature in 300 Premier League matches for the club, when he turned out for Crystal Palace against his former side Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

With Ward describing the occasion as a 'see you later' rather than a 'goodbye', it's time to look back in appreciation towards the longevity of our biggest Premier League appearance maker, with our top 10 Premier League appearance makers...

### 10. Christian Benteke – 162 appearances

The towering presence of Christian Benteke was a prominent feature of Palace’s offensive arsenal for six Premier League seasons between 2016 and 2022, having joined from Liverpool.

The Belgian scored 35 times in 162 Premier League games for the Eagles, finishing top scorer in his debut campaign (16/17) with 15 league goals, a season in which he missed just two top-flight matches.

As Chairman Steve Parish himself surmised upon Benteke’s departure: “Christian has played a crucial role in this club’s Premier League journey, making an immediate impact after signing and playing a central role in the squad ever since.”

### 9. Scott Dann – 164 appearances

Seven-and-a-half years’ superb service are reflected in Dann’s 164 Palace top-flight appearances – a figure which surely would have been much higher, were it not for the cruel cruciate knee ligament injury which limited the playing time in his latter years in red and blue.

The solid centre-back will nevertheless remain fondly remembered for representing the club with distinction after joining from Blackburn Rovers in January 2014, going on to be named Player of the Season in 2014/15, Players’ Player of the Season the following season, and score an impressive 13 Premier League goals.

### 7. Tyrick Mitchell & Andros Townsend – 168 appearances

Palace Academy graduate Mitchell is an England international and holds the record as the youngest player in Crystal Palace history to reach 100, and subsequently 150, Premier League appearances for the club. 

What a journey it has been – and continues to be – for the sprightly full-back.

It’s impossible to recall Andros Townsend’s Premier League feats with Palace without landing on one moment in particular: a memorable effort in a 3-2 win over Manchester City in December 2018, which was nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award and won Premier League Goal of the Season.

But the winger’s consistent output was equally impressive, having missed just four Premier League matches in his first three seasons with the club after signing from Newcastle in July 2016. Playing on average over 33 top-flight games each season, Townsend remains another popular figure in South London.

### 6. Luka Milivojevic – 183 appearances

Another former Captain Fantastic departed SE25 in the summer of 2023 with 198 appearances for the club in all competitions under his belt, including 183 in the Premier League.

The Serbian’s 28 goals place him third in Palace’s all-time Premier League standings behind only Ebere Eze, Benteke, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Wilfried Zaha; he was the club’s top scorer in both the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns; and he captained the side since 2018, having only joined the Eagles from Olympiacos the previous year.

In the words of Chairman Steve Parish: “Luka contributed an immense amount to the team both on and off the pitch, and was a crucial figure in our long stay in the Premier League.”

### 5. Jordan Ayew – 195 appearances

A consistent performer across five seasons in a Palace shirt, Ghanaian forward Ayew played 20 times during his first season in red and blue (2018/19, on loan from Swansea) – and would only miss 13 Premier League games in the four seasons following.

Offering endeavour, versatility and quality, arguably Ayew’s best campaign was in 2019/20 when he was named both Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season, but the experienced forward impressed in a variety of roles in attack until his departure at the beginning of this season.

### 4. Jeffrey Schlupp – 220 appearances

Now in his 12th season as a Premier League player – two-and-a-half with Leicester, the remainder in red and blue, prior to joining Celtic on loan in January 2025 – Jeffrey Schlupp has formed part of sides both title-winning and battling for survival, fulfilling a myriad of positional roles within both.

A massive 220 of Schlupp's Palace appearances have been in the Premier League, with his energy, experience and quality on the ball seeing him enjoy a personal-best 34 top-flight appearances in 2022/23, during which he netted three times, including an important strike in a 4-3 win over West Ham United.

### 3. James McArthur – 240 appearances

Industrious midfielder McArthur – over the course of nine seasons – made 253 appearances in all competitions in a Palace shirt, playing over 19,000 minutes and scoring 19 times.

A virtual ever-present during his first six seasons in red and blue, McArthur missed just six Premier League games between the summers of 2017 and 2020, totalling 240 appearances in the competition and notching match-winning goals against the likes of Watford, Burnley and Arsenal.

It was only fitting that, on the occasion of his appearance for the club, he returned from long-term injury to wear the captain’s armband against Aston Villa in early 2023. A true leader, on and off the pitch.

### 2. Wilfried Zaha – 291 appearances

Perhaps the club's greatest-ever player?

Raised within earshot of Selhurst Park and graduating from the Academy system, Wilfried Zaha became one of the best players in Palace history through over a decade's service to the club.

Zaha was the fulcrum to innumerable Palace successes since his debut in March 2010 and, having been pivotal to firing his team into the Premier League, won three back-to-back club Player of the Year trophies between 2016 and 2018 – an achievement matched only by Julian Speroni.

The winger also captained the side for the first time in his Palace career during the 20/21 campaign, with his first ever game with the armband being a 3-1 victory away at Old Trafford, where he netted twice; and in 2021/22 found the net 15 times in all competitions, a season-best, including a Premier League Goal of the Month winner against Norwich City in February 2022.

Little wonder, then, that [a mural now adorns the wall](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/wilfried-zaha-mural-unveiled-selhurst-park/) at the junction of Park Road and Holmesdale Road, a stone’s throw away from Rothesay Road where Zaha was raised.

### 1. Joel Ward – 305 appearances

The undisputed No. 1 on this list, and the first-ever player to hit 300 Premier League games in red and blue – the number of milestones Ward has hit in red and blue is almost endless. 

Ward first joined Palace at the start of the club’s successful promotion-winning season from the Championship, 2012/13, and has since accumulated the eighth-most appearances of any Palace player in history (363).

A consistent, dependable performer in the side across many a year, Ward was named club captain in 2023/24, when he was hailed as “the ultimate professional” by then-manager Roy Hodgson. 

In April 2024, he became the first-ever Palace player to feature in 300 Premier League matches for the club.

Simply put – Wardy will always be one of South London's own.

It has been announced Joel Ward will depart Crystal Palace this summer after 13 years in South London, having – in that time – played a pivotal role in taking the club up to the Premier League, and keeping us challenging there.

Little did any of us know, at that time, that such an understated arrival would actually mark the arrival of a modern Crystal Palace F.C. legend.

The Hampshire-born defender first joined Palace at the start of the club’s successful promotion-winning season from the Championship, 2012/13, and was an instant success, playing a huge role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League – including a dramatic goal-line clearance in the play-off final against Watford at Wembley.

He has been a core member of the team ever since, excelling through promotion, an FA Cup final – soon to become two, of course – and Palace's longest top-flight spell, taking on the club captaincy in 2023/24.

Ward’s achievements are innumerable, the milestones countless. The word ‘legend’ is arguably overused in modern football – but simply not so here.

So many fond memories, so many incredible moments – moments that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life.

The 35-year-old is handed an almost impossible place to start: how does Joel Ward wish to be remembered by Crystal Palace supporters?

He smiles wryly, pausing for thought, and says: “How do I want the Palace fans to remember me? Hopefully, that I gave everything for the club… and that I'm one of their own, I guess.

“For me, it's been a huge privilege to wear this shirt, to represent this club. From the outset all I've wanted to do is play football – and I've achieved that.

“I've achieved a dream of mine to play at the highest level and to play in the Premier League. I'm privileged and blessed to have worn the Palace shirt as well.

“It's been an incredible journey, so many fond memories, so many incredible moments – moments that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life.”

Only one thing for it, then, upon the announcement that – after 13 years with the club – Ward would be leaving the club upon the expiration of his current contract: a trip down memory lane.

Dial back the clock and we’re in 2012/13 again – one of the most important seasons in the 164-year history of Crystal Palace Football Club.

“Jeez, that seems like a lifetime ago,” Ward chuckles, staring at the first Palace photograph of many paving his wall of nostalgia in a South London studio.

“Not the best start to the season, but that season was remembered for one thing and one thing only – and that was the promotion.

“I don't think we had the expectation that we were going to get promoted that season, but it was certainly in the plan to try and take this club to the next level… Thankfully, that’s kind of happened!”

Wembley photos are next: the aforementioned 1-0 win over Watford in extra-time, thanks to Wilfried Zaha’s driving run, Kevin Phillips’ penalty, Julián Speroni’s super saves, a fierce collective team effort – and Ward’s remarkable last-gasp intervention.

In short: a day out at Wembley to remember.

“It still gives me goosebumps now kind of looking back!” Ward laughs. “Jeez, I couldn’t even grow a beard at that point, look…

“I think the moment that obviously changed the course for this club, and for me personally, was the play-off final. To win that and to take this club into the Premier League… now you look at it, it's obviously thriving in the Premier League.

“They're doing incredible things, the team is thriving, and we're reaching new heights, so that's an incredible moment to cherish.”

Ward’s trip down memory lane takes him to more landmarks: his first Crystal Palace goal – a calmly-taken curler against Queens Park Rangers in March 2015, and subsequent memorable celebration, and a run to his first FA Cup Final – against Manchester United – in 2015/16.

Ward played the full 120 minutes that day – extra-time again at Wembley – but this time came out on the losing side. A return to the venue on Saturday to face Manchester City could yet see him raise aloft the FA Cup, however.

“We came so close, but it just wasn't meant to be at that time,” Ward reflects. “But we go again.

“The lads have put in an incredible shift this season, and it'd be incredible to see them run out there and obviously put in a performance that we know that we can put in, and rewrite history for the club.”

The fans are always lifting the roof. You go to many other clubs, and I don't think they've got the same passion for the club that they support.

Ward would become a model of consistency in South London’s famous red and blue – a stalwart of the side under multiple managers – and, eventually, during 2023/24, club captain under Roy Hodgson, leading the way with his experience, professionalism and dedication to the highest standards.

“Week in, week out at Selhurst, there’s never a dull moment,” he smiles. “The fans are always lifting the roof. You go to many other clubs, and I don't think they've got the same passion for the club that they support.

“When you step through the door and you come into a club like this, it's infectious. The Chairman and the fans have created a culture and an atmosphere and an environment such that, when players play for this club, they always take a little slice of the club with them.”

Ward’s other great passion? His family – his emotions shining through when he talks about them: his wife, Jessica; their two young boys (and with a baby girl due in the coming days); and their role, love and support in his life.

“I've been fortunate enough to have, from day one, an incredibly supportive network around me, in my family, my parents, my siblings, my friends, and my extended family,” Ward says proudly.

“My wife has been someone who's been on this journey from the moment it started, really,” From back then, to up to this moment here, she’s supported me. She’s been a rock for me.

“It’s the biggest honour, by far, to be a father. To walk out with these boys is special.”

A family man for a family club. A man of dignity, pride, principles – and a footballer of the utmost quality and character.

“Certainly this club has a piece of my heart, and red and blue runs through my veins,” Ward comes full circle.

“Every picture here tells a story. It tells a moment – and there’ve been some incredible moments to cherish.

“It’s been an incredible journey with so many fond memories, so many incredible moments – moments that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life.

“Obviously, I came from somewhere else. But I’ve been a part of this club and a part of the furniture for so long that I’d like to think I’m part of the family.

“This isn’t ‘goodbye’ – it’s merely a ‘see you later.’”

The revamped Palace TV section means you can catch up on all the highlights and key clips as soon as they are available, as well as all the exclusive interviews and features from Copers Cope Road.

Each video is now hosted in an improved video player with better rewind and fast-forward functionality, **and can be connected to Chromecast devices by tapping the 'cast' icon in the top-right corner.**
