The United States international certainly enjoyed a 25th year to remember, with FA Cup and Community Shield trophy lifts at Wembley for club – as well as being a key part of the side which granted Selhurst Park European football for the first time – and a run to the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup final last summer for country.

And with a home World Cup tournament on the horizon this summer, the defender – who is part of a 27-man USA squad due to face Belgium and Portugal in Atlanta in the next few days – and is well positioned to fulfil even more of his dreams in the near future.

"My goal in life is to be the reason why somebody picks up a soccer ball," Richards [recently told talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/4016662/chris-richards-crystal-palace-usmnt-usa-world-cup/) at the 2026 Champions of Marketing event in London.

"If we as a collective, if we're able to give good enough performances – performances that make America proud, but also performances that allow a kid to pick up a soccer ball one day – then it's a successful one."

They are the words of a leader. 26 is a young age, even in footballing terms, but [Richards’ journey](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/features/chris-richards-from-all-american-boy-to-premier-league-pro/) – from all-American high school star, playing soccer with his friends on Saturdays in Hoover, Alabama, to assisting Robert Lewandowski with Bayern Munich and, years after that, raising Palace’s first-ever trophy – has been full of a plethora of experiences

It’s a story that encompasses rejection, risk and rejuvenation, from Alabama to south London via Texas and Munich. Hollywood eat your hearts out.

All of it, however, has amounted to him becoming the fine man, footballer – and, hopefully, inspiration to those who come after – who wears the Palace and USA shirt with pride.

"It's a bit cliché – you get knocked down, you keep getting up," said Richards.

"That's exactly the mentality that I had. And every time I've faced a setback in my career, I've kind of always looked back to the 16-year-old Chris who didn't make it to FC Dallas. Just the same mentality – just keep going."

Nowadays, Richards is one of the first names on the teamsheet for both Palace and the USA, playing in the back three – a role he relishes.

"I love it," he [told CBS](https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/chris-richards-usmnt-most-important-defender/). "I think even for us defenders, it's a chance for us to be aggressive. When you're so far off the pitch, it's your time to smash into somebody and you win the ball up that high and then it really is a counter-attack within 20 yards of goals. I really enjoy it. I really do.

"I think there's a lot of emphasis on ball-playing center backs but for me, my first role is to defend. "Of course, I want to be able to play with the ball. I feel like I do pretty well but I think being able to usually defend and kind of completely eliminate the other team's best attacking threat, that makes me happier than anything. 

"Now, I think to be a central defender, you have to be a little sick in the head, to be honest with you! You have to want to head the ball. You have to want to crunch people and pretty much, your job is that once you get the ball, to give to the people who go make the magic happen.

"For me, my favourite thing in the world is to have like a crazy crunch tackle and everybody goes wild so I'd rather do that than score a goal. That's my job and I love it."

As for this summer’s home World Cup finals: “success for us is leaving a legacy," Richards said of the US Men’s National Team hopes, under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino.

"When you think about the last World Cup that was played in the US [in 1994], it birthed the MLS. 

"Maybe it's the reason why my dad allowed me to pick up a soccer ball or why my mom allowed me to pick up a soccer ball when I was younger."

With keepsakes galore – medals and memorabilia from throughout his eclectic career – donning the walls back home in South London, Richards admits his debut ball, from his senior USA Debut against Panama back in November 2020, signed by everyone who was on the field that day – takes pride of place.

"No matter what country I've moved to, no matter where I've lived, I've always kept that ball," he [recently told GOAL](https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/chris-richards-usmnt-crystal-palace-premier-league/blt408bfcf5ed0b3afb). "I look at it every day, consciously or subconsciously, because that ball is something I worked my whole life for.

“I have to keep going, but every time I see it, I just remember the feeling of wearing that national team jersey for the first time. Then I fast forward and think about the national anthem for that first game against Paraguay at the World Cup…

I also understand that I've grown into this

"I know it's going to be a proud moment. I'm not going to look too far ahead, but I know that, once March camp is done, it's going to be hard not to think about the World Cup.

Turning 26? 

"I understand that this is a year that can change my life," he smiled.

"I try not to put too much pressure on myself, but I also understand that I've grown into this."

When Damola Eniola first got involved with **[Palace for Life Foundation](https://www.palaceforlife.org/)**, he was a young player turning up to kick a ball around with his friends and nearly two decades later, he’s helping the next generation of young South Londoners find their place in the game and in their community.

He has been named Premier League Community Captain, recognising his longstanding contribution to Palace for Life’s Premier League Kicks programme and the positive impact he continues to have on young people across South London.

Damola was presented with his Premier League Community Captain trophy, armband and pennant by Palace defender Chris Richards at the Crystal Palace Training Ground earlier this month. The recognition formed part of the Premier League’s [**More Than A Game](https://www.premierleague.com/en/footballandcommunity/morethanagame)** campaign which celebrates the impact clubs and their charities make in communities across the country.

His story with Palace for Life began at Milne Park in New Addington where he first attended Premier League Kicks sessions as a participant. Those early sessions gave him a place to play football and spend time with friends, but they also opened the door to something more.

While completing his A-levels, Damola began volunteering at sessions and gained his Level 1 and Level 2 coaching badges, taking his first steps into mentoring young people in the same community he grew up in. Since then, his connection to the programme has only grown.

Damola has now been involved with Premier League Kicks for around 18 years, first as a participant and now as a Casual Coach, supporting sessions at venues a stone's throw away from Selhurst Park including Legacy Youth Zone and Merky FC HQ.

Away from the pitch, Damola has built a career in education and now works as a teacher, holding senior roles within his school, but he has always stayed connected to the programme that helped shape his path.

Through Premier League Kicks, Damola supports young people from a wide range of backgrounds, including displaced and refugee participants, helping create a positive space where they can play football, build confidence and feel part of their community.

Since launching in 2006, the programme has used the power of football to support young people in communities across the country, offering free sessions that help them develop confidence, build friendships and make positive life choices.

Jamie Broughton, Head of Community Engagement at Palace for Life, said Damola’s story shows the lasting impact the programme can have: "Damola has been such an asset to our Premier League Kicks programme. He has been a role model to so many participants to become better people and shape their futures.

“He represents the badge and the project with pride and shows what can be achieved through programmes like Premier League Kicks.”

This season is the 20th anniversary of Premier League Kicks, which sees 93 Premier League, EFL and National League clubs delivering free weekly football and personal-development sessions.

Former Premier League Kicks Participant, school teacher and Palace for Life coach Damola Eniola is one of more than 100 people across England and Wales who were recently celebrated through the Premier League’s More Than A Game campaign for his involvement in the Premier League Kicks programme.

Now into its eighth season, the popular gaming competition gives fans a shot at glory on the virtual pitch, by mixing it with the best from other top-tier sides and winning silverware for their favourite club – as well as a share of a £100,000 prize pool.

The duo of **Ethan 'EthxnH' Higgins**, a former England international, and **Ben 'BrigArmy17' Brigadle**, a previous quarter-finalist with West Ham United, will be representing Palace and looking to secure the silverware. Ethan has twice previously reached the semi-finals with the Eagles.

Finals weekend, which comprises a series of knockout rounds, takes place on Dock10 in Salford across both **Saturday, 28th March** and **Sunday, 29th March**. 

### **What's happened so far this season?**

Having come through in a fiercely competitive ePremier League qualification process to win the right to represent Palace, EthxnH and BrigArmy17 excelled in the group stages of the competition earlier this month.

The duo won six of their eight matches in Group A, finishing ahead of Chelsea, West Ham and Fulham – and behind only Manchester City.

Results comprised two thrashings of Fulham (3-0 and 9-2); one win apiece against Chelsea (a 2-4 loss for BrigArmy17, but a 5-4 win for EthxnH); a double over West Ham (6-2 and 2-1 respectively); and one win apiece against reigning champions Manchester City (4-2 win for BrigArmy17, but a 2-3 loss for EthxnH).

Unlike previous years, no clubs have been eliminated from the Group Stage. Instead, their results have decided where they will enter the Knockouts and who they will face first.   

**As a result of finishing second in Group A**, Palace enter Saturday's knockout rounds in the third Knockout Round.

The Eagles will start Finals weekend already in the last eight of the competition, needing to overcome the winners of Brentford, AFC Bournemouth and Aston Villa to reach the last four, where they would face Tottenham Hotspur.

Live streams on the tournament start at approximately 16:00 UK time on Saturday and Sunday. 

All matches are played over two legs, with one played on each console, both Xbox Series X and PlayStation5. If a tie is level at the end of the second leg, extra time and, if needed, penalties will be played.

The length of each game is six minutes (per half) while precision shooting is required. The winner will claim £30,000, with £15,000 going to the runner-up. Every side participating will receive a share of the overall pot.

Palace have enjoyed a strong record in the ePremier League in recent seasons, finishing fourth in 2022/23 with England international Higgins and debutant Ben ‘Ben x W12’ Evans knocking out the likes of Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest before succumbing to winners Leeds in the semi-finals.

In both of the last two seasons, Palace reached the Round of 16 stage, before being defeated by Tottenham Hotspur. 

This year, starting in the last eight, hopefully this time around they can go one step further and reach the final day.

The Palace boss sat down this week to discuss the game against Charlton, as well as the team returning to Selhurst Park for the first time since November 2024.

There is definitely a sense of excitement at the training ground, with Potter and the team raring to go.

"Yeah, it's going to be good. We always want to play in the best stadiums and the best grounds. The pitch will be beautiful, it looks in great condition.

"I think we want to put on a show no matter where we play. We've got a really good fan base at Sutton and we've come up with some really good performances there. 

"We've got a great atmosphere at the VBS, so we want to bring that to Selhurst," she said.

Despite the anticipation, Potter is keen for her players to play the game, and not the occasion.

She said: "It's an occasion, it's a derby, it's a big game - but we have put in a lot of mental work and psychology work towards the back end of the season.

"The opponent that we play is going to pose different threats and I think that shifts down to our training habits and our game plan.

"We saw it in the second-half on Sunday and you can see the difference in our performance. 

"It's about trying to do that for 90 minutes. As soon as that whistle goes, I'm sure the players will just be fully focused on what's laid ahead of them."

Palace lost 1-0 away to Charlton in the first game of the season, all the way back in September.

Potter was full of praise for the Addicks boss Karen Hills, and was under no illusion as to the scale of Sunday's challenge.

"They're really close to the finish line now. I think what Karen and her staff have managed to do this season has been unbelievable. 

"To go that many games unbeaten and to be super, super consistent and keep pulling away with results and points - there's no fluke to that.

"That's not luck. They're where they deserve to be. We've got to make sure that we can match that.

"It's a very long time since we played them last. Obviously, it was the first game of the season. It feels like forever ago.

"Both teams have changed quite a bit since then. We're looking forward to it. We know it's going to be a really, really tough test.

"They do what they do really, really well. There's no coincidence in the fact. We've got a huge amount of respect for where they sit in the league and what they can achieve this season.

"We've got our own goals and our own ambitions as well. That starts with us putting on a good performance and trying to take all three points."

In defeating AEK Larnaca in the Round of 16, the Eagles became the first English team to reach the quarter-finals of a major UEFA competition in their debut European season since 1979.

In April, that adventure will continue against Serie A side, Fiorentina, who have reached two of the UEFA Conference League’s four finals. Palace will therefore be counting on the full South London support on **Thursday, 9th April (20:00 BST kick-off)** for a historic night under the lights at Selhurst Park.

### Saturday, 26th March

#### Ismaïla Sarr (**Senegal** v Peru)

**Ismaïla Sarr**'s spectacular individual season continued with his 18th goal in 41 appearances for club and country combined, helping Senegal to a 2-0 friendly win over Peru on Saturday afternoon.

In the first international window since the Africa Cup of Nations, Sarr and Senegal showed just why many are tipping them as a team to watch at this summer's FIFA World Cup finals with two excellent goals at the Stade de France in Paris.

The first of those came via Nicolas Jackson, who placed home the first just before half-time following a storming run from Ibrahima Mbaye.

Shortly after half-time, Sarr then doubled their lead with a wonderfully composed finish at the end of a lengthy passing move, which ended with a through-ball that the Palace forward carried past two defenders and stroked home with aplomb. He ended up playing 80 minutes.

Next up for Sarr – who now has 19 goals in 81 caps – and Senegal: a friendly with Gambia (Tuesday, 31st March, 20:00 BST) in Dakar.

Senegal have already qualified for the World Cup finals this summer and will face France, Norway plus an additional qualifier in Group I.

#### Evann Guessand (**Ivory Coast** v South Korea)

In his first international appearance since joining Palace, **Evann Guessand** was back in the Ivory Coast starting XI for the first of two friendly matches on English soil.

The first, against South Korea in Milton Keynes at Stadium MK on Saturday afternoon, saw the Asian side hit the post early on, before the Palace man opened the scoring after 35 minutes.

Guessand made a clever run and produced a cute finish beyond South Korea 'keeper Jo Hyeon-woo, rolling home the opener from the edge of the six-yard box.

Despite South Korea hitting the woodwork again before the half-time whistle, *Les Elephants* doubled their advantage in first-half added time through Simon Adingra, before taking control in the second period through further goals from Martial Godo and Wilfried Singo.

Next, Guessand – who played the full 90 minutes on Saturday – and Ivory Coast head over to Liverpool and the Hill Dickinson Stadium to take on World Cup-bound Scotland on Tuesday (20:30 BST).

#### Daichi Kamada (Scotland v **Japan**)

Japan are taking on both Scotland and England in UK-based friendlies over the window, with midfielder **Daichi Kamada** in their squad.

The four-time Asian Cup winners first travelled to Hampden Park on Saturday evening, with Kamada beginning the game on the bench.

After both teams missed several presentable chances, and struck the woodwork, Kamada came on after 78 minutes – and, on 84 minutes, saw his team take the lead through Junya Ito's low finish at the end of a flowing move.

Kamada will hope to be more involved when he travels to Wembley this coming Tuesday (19:45 BST), returning to the scene of Palace’s FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs.

#### Chris Richards (**United States** v Belgium)

With only a few months left until they co-host the biggest international tournament on the planet, Mauricio Pochettino’s USA ramp up preparations with a pair of friendlies against top opposition.

Palace's **Chris Richards**, part of the 27-man squad, missed Saturday's 2-5 defeat to Belgium in Atlanta through injury, but will hope to be back for the next match against former European champions Portugal on Tuesday evening (Wednesday 00:00 BST kick-off) in the same city.

Following this double header USA will only have two more fixtures before beginning their World Cup campaign against Paraguay.

#### Adam Wharton & Dean Henderson

It was confirmed by the FA on Saturday evening that **Adam Wharton** had returned to Palace from England duty with a knock picked up in the second-half of Friday's 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

**Dean Henderson**, however, named in the initial 35-man squad, linked up with his teammates on Friday ahead of the friendly match against Japan at Wembley on Tuesday 31st March (19:45 BST).

### Friday, 26th March

#### Adam Wharton (**England** v Uruguay)

With Thomas Tuchel naming a 35-man squad for this pre-World Cup international break, **Adam Wharton** came off the bench at half-time against Uruguay on Friday night to win his fifth cap for his country.

The 22-year-old put in a typically composed display at the heart of midfield, where he partnered Everton's James Garner and Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo.

In a tenacious contest light on chances, England thought they were on course for victory when Ben White stabbed home from a corner in the 81st minute – Wharton involved in the set-piece move which led to the finish – only for Uruguay to win and convert a penalty deep into injury time to level the scores.

#### Chadi Riad (**Morocco** v Ecuador)

Chadi Riad's inspiring return to action took another step forwards with the defender's first international appearance for Morocco since 6th November 2024.

The 22-year-old, having returned for Palace from long-term injury – and surgery – in January, was in from the start for the *Atlas Lions* - under new management in Mohamed Ouahbi - in a keenly-contested friendly in Madrid.

And the Palace centre-back duly played the full 90 minutes as Morocco bounced back from going behind in the 48th minute to John Yeboah's effort by snatching a draw with an 88th-minute set-piece equaliser by Neil El Aynaoui.

Morocco had earlier won a penalty through El Aynaoui, which had been missed – with VAR subsequently ruling out the rebound for encroachment.

The newly-crowned AFCON champions next face Paraguay in Lens this coming Tuesday (20:00 BST).

#### Jørgen Strand Larsen (Netherlands v **Norway**)

On Friday evening, **Jørgen Strand Larsen** made his first appearance for Norway since becoming Palace's club-record signing in January.

The forward won his landmark 25th cap against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, starting for a Landslaget side who qualified for the World Cup finals in style.

On Friday, he played the full 90 minutes, initially partnering a former Eagle in Alexander Sorloth up front – but despite Norway taking a first-half lead through Andreas Schjelderup, the hosts turned things around through goals from Virgil van Dijk and Tijani Reijnders either side of half-time.

Strand Larsen will therefore be looking to add to his four goals on Tuesday evening (17:00 BST) when Norway host Switzerland on Tuesday.

#### Yéremy Pino (**Spain** v Serbia)

**Yéremy Pino**, included in a 27-man squad for Spain’s fixtures this window, featured as a last substitute as the reigning European Champions hosted Serbia on Friday night in Villarreal. 

Spain were originally set to face South American Champions Argentina in the Finalissima during this window, only for the game in Qatar to be cancelled due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

And Pino's side were already three goals to the good by the time he joined the action in the 77th minute, with no further goals after that marker.

The Palace forward scored his fourth goal for Spain back in the October window during a 2-0 win over Georgia, his first international strike since joining the Eagles.

Egypt are their next opponents the following Tuesday (20:00 GMT) in Cornellà de Llobregat.

#### Romain Esse (Andorra U21s v **England U21s**)

For England Under-21s, meanwhile, **Romain Esse** – currently on loan at Coventry City in the Championship – was recalled to Lee Carsley's 23-man squad for two UEFA U21 EURO qualifiers.

Having gone into the game with five wins from five in their qualifying group stage so far, the Young Lions were given an almighty scare after Gerard Sola Garcia put the hosts ahead early in the second-half.

Esse came off the bench on 71 minutes as England sought out an equaliser – and they got it in the 90th minute from the penalty spot, as Rico Lewis converted when Jobe Bellingham was felled.

England remain top of Group D with 16 points, ahead of hosting Moldova next Tuesday (31st, 19:00 GMT) at Carrow Road.

### Thursday, 26th March

#### Maxence Lacroix (Brazil v **France**)

Called up for the first time by France at senior level – having previously played for his country as a youth international, most recently in October 2019 at Under-20s level – Lacroix's timely inclusion saw him thrown straight into the action by Didier Deschamps.

The Palace vice-captain began Thursday night's pre-World Cup friendly at the Gillette Stadium, Massachusetts – which pitted France, ranked third in the world by FIFA against Brazil, ranked fifth – on the bench.

But after France took a first-half lead through Kylian Mbappé, defender Dayot Upamecano saw red shortly after half-time – prompting Lacroix to emerge on 58 minutes for his senior international debut.

With Lacroix playing as the left centre-back in a back four, he saw his country – seven minutes later – go two goals to the good, as former Palace winger Michael Olise teed up Hugo Ekitike to double the lead.

Brazil did reduce the deficit on 78 minutes when Gleison Bremer found himself in the right place at the right time to turn home from close range.

But a victory over Brazil, to mark the 25-year-old's senior international debut, made it quite the night for Lacroix.

#### Justin Devenny (Italy v **Northern Ireland**)

In the European play-offs for World Cup qualification, **Justin Devenny** and Northern Ireland's dreams were dashed in Italy on Thursday night.

The Palace midfielder earned his 11th cap, and ninth start in the Green and White Army's last 10 matches, as Northern Ireland looked to take a step closer to their first World Cup finals since 1986.

With Devenny playing the full 90 minutes in midfield, Northern Ireland sadly found themselves outclassed on the night in Bergamo, showing plenty of defensive resolve but failing to muster a shot on target against their Italian hosts.

In the end, clinical second-half finishes from Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean settled the tie, ending Devenny's World Cup dreams this year.

The 22-year-old Palace man has nevertheless been a key part in a youthful Northern Ireland squad which, over the cause of this qualification campaign, has given plenty of cause to be optimistic for the future.

#### Brennan Johnson (**Wales** v Bosnia & Herzegovina)

Drawn in the same European play-off section, Wales and **Brennan Johnson** hosted Bosnia & Herzegovina in Cardiff in the other semi-final on Thursday evening.

Johnson, who had already represented Cymru at the 2022 finals, started on the right hand side of the Wales attack, and saw his team take the lead in spectacular fashion not long after half-time through Daniel James' rising rocket from distance.

But with less than five minutes to go, and Bosnia's attacking influence growing, Edin Dzeko became the oldest European goalscorer in World Cup qualification with a glancing header to take the tie into extra-time.

A physical contest saw few chances in the additional 30 minutes – although Johnson did come close late on with a header back across goal in the closing seconds – meaning the match went to spot-kicks.

There, despite Bosnia's first kick being saved, Johnson and Neco Williams sadly both missed from the spot, with Wales' World Cup dreams dashed in the cruellest of fashions.

As a result, Johnson and Wales will host Devenny and Northern Ireland for a friendly on Tuesday evening at Cardiff City Stadium.

#### Daniel Muñoz & Jefferson Lerma (**Colombia** v Croatia)

Eagles duo **Daniel Muñoz** and **Jefferson Lerma** are once again both included in the Colombia squad for two friendlies in the USA as they prepare for the World Cup finals.

Their first encounter saw them tackle fellow qualifiers Croatia at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday evening – the first-ever meeting between the two nations.

The Palace duo both started for Muñoz and Lerma's 43rd and 63rd caps respectively.

*Los Cafeteros* almost immediately went a goal to the good, as well, with Jhon Arias striking within two minutes – but Croatia levelled just three minutes later when Luka Vuskovic let fly from range.

And on the stroke of half-time, Igor Matanovic took advantage of some slack defending from a corner to head home the eventual winner, with Colombia unable to respond in the second-half; Muñoz and Lerma played 71 and 63 minutes respectively.

Next up: a match against France this Sunday (21:00 BST).

#### Jaydee Canvot (Luxembourg U21s v **France U21s**)

And finally on Thursday, **Jaydee Canvot** made his fifth appearance for France Under-21s – again playing the full 90 minutes at right-back – in yet another dominant win, this time triumphing 5-1 away in Luxembourg.

The 19-year-old has now won four of his five matches with France U21s, with his team two points clear at the top at the halfway mark of Group C in Under-21 European Championship qualifying.

Next up, they host second-placed Iceland on Monday evening.
