I wouldn’t say Villa’s record fazes us

Having already reached the latter stages of the competition, Walker-Smith says the mood within the squad is one of excitement and belief.

“Excited to get this far to begin with,” he said. “But I feel like the whole team – the boys and the staff – are buzzing for us to get this far, and we don’t intend to stop now.”

The opportunity to play under the lights at Villa Park is another moment the defender is relishing.

“Big time,” he explained. “Those are the sort of stadiums you want to play in when you're older. Just getting that experience and exposure now is massive. Even aside from the game itself, it’s something you want to be doing as a young player.”

Villa come into the tie with a rich Youth Cup history, having lifted the trophy five times, most recently last season, but Walker-Smith insists Palace are not intimidated by their opponents’ pedigree...

“I wouldn’t say it fazes us,” he said. “Every age group is different. Aston Villa always have a strong academy, but Palace have proven over the years that we can match teams like Villa.”

The occasion itself also carries extra significance for Palace, with the club reaching the Youth Cup quarter-finals for the first time in more than 15 years.

“100% it gives us extra motivation,” Walker-Smith said. “To prove that the group you’re with can do something that not many teams have done before – it pushes you to go that little bit harder. We’ve come this far and we don’t intend to stop.”

Walker-Smith has gained valuable experience this season stepping up to the Under-21s, featuring regularly in squads across Premier League 2 and the Premier League International Cup.

He believes that exposure has helped him develop the composure needed for occasions like Tuesday’s tie.

“Playing U21 football, men’s football and even internationally gives you a sort of calmness when stepping onto the pitch in big games,” he said. “It’s about helping everyone stay relaxed and treating it like any other match.

“What we do every week has got us to this point, so it’s just about continuing that and leading by example for the younger players or those who might not have had that experience yet.”

Confidence has also been boosted by Palace’s recent success in the U18 Premier League Cup, with the young Eagles securing a place in the final against Manchester United after a 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Hotspur Way.

“It’s given us big confidence,” Walker-Smith said. “We’ve had a little taste now of what it’s like to get to a final, and I think the boys want that feeling again.

“After the game everyone was buzzing, waiting to see who we’d get next. That sort of experience gives the whole group motivation to go and do it again in another competition.”

Reflecting on his own campaign, Walker-Smith says the opportunity to move between age groups has been invaluable to his development.

“I’ve found my season very positive,” he said. “Playing with the 21s is a different type of football – the pace and physicality are different – and then when I come back to my own age group I try to bring what I’ve learned from the older boys.

“It’s been really educational for me. I’ve been able to add little pieces to my game and develop skills that I probably wouldn’t have if I hadn’t played across different age groups. That’s been a really positive impact for me this season.”

Crystal Palace defender Charlie Walker-Smith says the young Eagles are determined to keep their cup run going as they prepare to face Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup at Villa Park on Tuesday evening (10th March, 18:00 GMT).

For Palace, the tie represents an opportunity to move one step closer to ending nearly half a century without lifting the famous trophy.

For Villa, it is a chance to continue their remarkable pedigree in the competition, with the young Lions chasing a record-extending sixth title after their most recent triumph came as recently as last season against Manchester City.

Despite both clubs’ rich history across the 74-year existence of the FA Youth Cup, meetings between the two sides have been rare. Tuesday’s clash will mark only the fourth time Palace and Villa have faced each other in the competition – and the first at the quarter-final stage.

Historically, Palace hold the advantage, having won two of the previous three encounters.

The first meeting came on **22nd December 1975**, just days before Christmas. Palace progressed on that occasion during a memorable run to the semi-finals of the 1975/76 competition, where they were eventually eliminated by a strong West Bromwich Albion side that would go on to lift the trophy.

Three years later came the most famous meeting between the clubs...

In 1978, Palace reached the FA Youth Cup final for the second consecutive year after lifting the trophy for the first time in 1977 under former defender John Cartwright. **The 1978 final**, condensed into a single match due to fixture congestion, was played at the neutral venue of Highbury – with Aston Villa standing in Palace’s way.

Once again, it was Terry Fenwick who delivered the decisive moment.

His goal secured a 1–0 victory for the young Eagles, sealing back-to-back FA Youth Cup triumphs and confirming the arrival of an exceptional generation of talent at Selhurst Park.

Those successes helped lay the foundations for what would become known as the ‘Team of the Eighties’. Players such as Kenny Sansom, Vince Hilaire, Dave Swindlehurst and Billy Gilbert progressed from the Youth Cup-winning side to become key figures in the first team.

Their influence was felt almost immediately. Six members of the 1978 Youth Cup squad featured in the final match of the 1978/79 season as Palace sealed promotion to the top flight in front of more than 50,000 supporters at Selhurst Park.

The most recent meeting between the clubs came in the **fourth round in 2016**, when Aston Villa ran out 5–1 winners at Selhurst Park.

Now, nearly a decade later, the latest chapter awaits at Villa Park – and if history is anything to go by, it promises to be another memorable contest!

Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are both proud names in FA Youth Cup history, and the two clubs will renew their rivalry once again when they meet in Tuesday’s quarter-final under the lights at Villa Park (10th March, 18:00 GMT).

The *Level Up: Women in Sports Series* is set to support 30 women between the ages of 16 and 24 in progressing their early careers in sport, providing exposure to careers across the industry, behind-the-scenes insights, and workshops delivered by different partners.

The inaugural intake of the Series was selected from over 220 applications, 39% of which were from women of colour – above sport industry standards.

Monday’s event saw the 30 programme participants come together to celebrate the launch of the series, joining invited guests from across sport for networking, career coaching and introductions to the industry as a whole.

Numerous organisations were in attendance at Selhurst Park, including the Premier League Foundation, Association of Black and Ethnic Engineers, Jabari, Motorsport UK Inclusion Hub and Futures in Sport.

Following the launch, the programme will consist of monthly workshops until July, including sessions with our collaborators, culminating in participants spending a day at the cricket at Lord’s – the ground owned by MCC – this summer.

At the heart of the launch event was an inspiring panel discussion, opened with an empowering speech from Crystal Palace Chief Executive Officer, Sharon Lacey, who discussed her journey to becoming the only female CEO in the Premier League.

The panel featured anecdotes and experiences of, and discussions of opportunities to, work in sport, as guests heard from Kassandra Farzavandi (Programme Planner at Mercedes-AMG Petrones F1 Team), Charlotte Marshall (London Spirit Marketing Manager at MCC), Gemma Staple (Female Engagement Officer at Palace for Life Foundation) and Charlotte Carter (General Manager – Women’s First Team at Crystal Palace).

The panel was moderated by Palace for Life’s Head of Pathways and Learning, Susan Patterson Smith, and was concluded by an inspirational talk from Polly Dedman (Director of Marketing at Motorsport UK).

Topics discussed included the non-linear nature of modern-day careers, particularly in sport; the benefits of embracing gender diversity across the industry; and the importance of supporting, empowering and celebrating one another’s success in doing so.

With Palace a goal and a man to the good, having scored twice in quick succession to turn the game on its head, the euphoria was already abound in the away end at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Then Jaydee Canvot lifted his head and played a clever pass into the feet of Adam Wharton. The midfielder, by the time the ball had arrived at his feet, had already lifted his head and – instinctively, in the blink of an eye – assessed his options and quantified the precision and power it would take to play Ismaïla Sarr in.

It looked a long shot. In truth, it was. Yet the ball was inch-perfect, Sarr's powerful run unstoppable, and all amounted to make the finish for Palace's third goal, by comparison, so simple.

It can be easy to miss all these incredible details given the rapid-fire nature of Premier League football, so our Palace TV crew have slowed it right down below for you.

Later this month, a number of the Eagles' players will head off on international duty.

They'll be building on a feat which began on this day in 1908 with Newtown-born William Charles Davies – better known as **Billy Davies** – whose became our first-ever international player of the club's professional era.

A talented outside forward who began his career with short spells in Wales at Rhayader, Llandrindod and Knighton, Davis' first taste of English football came at Shrewsbury Town in 1903, where he played for two years prior to joining Stoke.

Another two-year stint followed but, when Stoke were relegated on the final day of the 1906/07 season, a new chapter in South London beckoned.

Davies joined the Glaziers as part of a widespread recruitment drive ahead of 1907/08, a change in manager – as club secretary Edmund Goodman stepped in to take the helm – coinciding with the departure of a number of key players.

With Palace looking to build on a 19th-place finish in the Southern Football League Division One the previous season, in came the likes of George Walker, Jimmy Bauchop, John Brearley and, from the Potters, Davies.

Three defeats in the opening four games of the season saw the campaign off to a poor start, but Palace would recover to finish fourth and lose just one of their last 13 matches – Davies scoring four times along the way.

As part of that run, Davies became the club's first-ever international of the professional era, debuting for Wales against Scotland in a British International Championship fixture.

In front of a crowd of 18,000 at Dens Park, Dundee, Davies was powerless to help his side avoid a 2-1 defeat, in what proved to be the first of four caps for his country.

Davies departed Palace for West Bromwich Albion after just a year, but returned to south London in 1910, and went on to play 162 times over five subsequent years, scoring 23 times in total for the club.

### Amateur era internationals

While Billy Davies became the first international of the professional club era in 1908, he was not Crystal Palace’s first-ever international. 

That honour falls to Alexander Morten, who played in goal for Scotland in March 1870. Morten stepped in at the last minute for the listed Scottish goalkeeper, James Kirkpatrick.

In fact, it’s not known if Morten had any Scottish blood in him and may just have been ‘roped in’ because Kirkpatrick couldn’t play and he was a recognised keeper for Crystal Palace. 

He went on to have a very good game and kept the score down for Scotland, who lost just 1-0.

Two others followed behind Morten in representing the amateur Palace on the international stage: in 1876, A. Savage and C. Smith represented England against Scotland.

International call-ups are now par for the course for a club of Crystal Palace's stature – but it was actually on this day (7th March), some 118 years ago, that the professional club could celebrate its first-ever international player.

OTD: Palace celebrates first-ever international of professional era

Palace’s first-ever European journey continues against the Cypriot Cup holders, with our first leg at home (**[tickets on general sale here](https://www.eticketing.co.uk/cpfc/EDP/Event/Index/979?position=1)**) on Thursday, 12th March (20:00 GMT) – and the second leg scheduled for **Thursday, 19th March (19:45 EET local time / 17:45 GMT) at the AEK Arena**.

*All tickets for the away leg must be purchased via the CPFC ticketing system and supporters will be required to enter their passport number as part of their purchase. Tickets must be collected in person – more information can be found below.*

Due to the capacity of the AEK Arena, tickets will be extremely limited to approximately 700 tickets.

It’s important to fight and make sure we get the win 

Victory would send Palace into the final four of the competition for the first time in over 15 years, and Judd believes the squad’s performances across the campaign have put them in a strong position heading into the tie.

Reflecting on the season so far, the skipper said: “Yeah, I think we’re doing well. Obviously, there are games where we haven’t picked up three points when we would have liked to, but overall we’re doing well.

“We’re going far in cup competitions and we’re still competing at the top of the table, which is good.”

Confidence in the camp has been strengthened further by Palace’s recent success in the U18 Premier League Cup, with the young Eagles booking their place in the final against Manchester United after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Hotspur Way.

It was a tight semi-final with few clear-cut chances early on, as Palace weathered pressure thanks to key interventions from Dylan Monk and Euan Danaher while Spurs forward Reiss Elliott-Parris remained the hosts main-attacking threat.

The decisive moment arrived in the 80th minute when Judd’s outswinging corner was met by a powerful header from David Angibeaud to seal victory.

“I think we know as a team it probably wasn’t our best performance overall,” Judd admitted. “But in games like that it’s important to fight and make sure we get the win, and I think that’s what we did.

“Sometimes you’ve got to take the scrappy goals, especially from set pieces, and then defend the lead. I think that’s exactly what we did.”

It’s the biggest competition at this level

Attention now turns to the FA Youth Cup; a competition Judd says holds special significance for every player at Academy level.

“I think the FA Youth Cup is the biggest competition at this level and everyone’s really excited,” he said.

“We’re expecting Villa to be technical and good on the ball – they like to move it and play passes – but for us it’s about working hard and playing the way we’ve played all season.”

Palace’s run to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup has been impressive. The young Eagles began their campaign under the lights at Selhurst Park with a 3–0 victory over Bradford City, where Benji Casey converted a penalty before substitute Stuart Oduro struck twice to seal the win.

The fourth round brought a challenging trip to Newcastle United at Whitley Park, but Palace produced one of their strongest performances of the season to secure a commanding 4–0 victory, with David Angibeaud and Casey among the goals.

A tougher test followed in the last 16 against Stevenage. Oduro opened the scoring after a pass from Judd before Casey’s driven cross forced an own goal. Stevenage pulled one back before half-time, but disciplined defending ensured Palace held on for a 2–1 win to reach the quarter-finals.

“I think we can’t underestimate anyone,” Judd explained when reflecting on the cup run so far. “Every team we’ve played has had different strengths and different ways of playing, and we’ve adapted well in each game. No matter what, it’s about working hard.”

Judd has captained the side throughout the 2025/26 campaign and says he relishes the responsibility the role brings.

“Yes, I like the responsibility,” he said. “I think it’s good for me and I just try to lead by example, talk to the players and make sure everyone is switched on when it comes to matchday.”

Palace have also been extremely solid defensively in the competition, conceding just once and keeping two clean sheets.

“When you keep clean sheets you’re always likely to do well,” Judd said. “We know that if we keep a solid base at the back, with the talent we’ve got in attack we can usually win games.”

That defensive unit has included younger players stepping up from the Under-16s, including centre-back Dylan Monk and ‘keeper Lucca Benetton.

“They’re very good players with unbelievable talent,” Judd said. “It’s just about making sure they stay calm and don’t overthink things. They’ve got the ability.”

Palace were beaten 3–1 by Villa earlier this season in the U18 Premier League South, though Judd believes the second-half response that day shows what his side are capable of.

“We didn’t start well and went 2–0 down, but the second half was much better,” he said. “We got a goal back and showed if we play like that for the whole game we can beat them.”

The young Lions are five-time winners of the FA Youth Cup and lifted the trophy as recently as last season, but Judd insists Palace are focused solely on their own performance.

“I think maybe it adds pressure for them, but for us we’re not worried about what they’ve done before,” he said. “We’re just focused on beating the team in front of us on the day.”

With the bright lights of Villa Park awaiting, Judd’s message to his teammates is simple: “Just work hard and enjoy it.”

Crystal Palace Under-18s captain Jasper Judd says the young Eagles are relishing the chance to test themselves on one of youth football’s biggest stages as they travel to face Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday evening (10th March, 18:00 GMT) at Villa Park.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of a historic night for the young Eagles!

### Eagle-Eyed Review

Palace head into the quarter-final in strong form after booking their place in the U18 Premier League Cup final with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Hotspur Way Training Centre on Wednesday afternoon.

The first half proved cagey, with few clear opportunities for either side. Palace weathered early pressure thanks to crucial defensive interventions from Dylan Monk and Euan Danaher, while Spurs forward Reiss Elliott-Parris remained a threat.

Gradually the young Eagles began to assert themselves, with dangerous deliveries from Jasper Judd and Dean Benamar increasing the pressure.

That success followed a thrilling 3–2 league victory over West Ham United in the U18 Premier League South. The result represented a strong response to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Leicester City, which had ended Palace’s five-game unbeaten run.

Currently third in the table on 31 points, the young Eagles sit five points behind leaders Tottenham and remain firmly in the title race - momentum they will hope to carry into Youth Cup action…

### Palace’s FAYC Story So Far…

Fifteen years is a long time in football – particularly at Academy level.

Generations of young Eagles have represented Palace since the club last reached this stage of the FA Youth Cup in February 2010 against Hull City. Now, this current Under-18s group has the opportunity to write its own chapter in club history.

Palace’s journey began under the lights at Selhurst Park on a wet December evening, as the young Eagles defeated Bradford City 3–0 in the Third Round.

Despite dominating possession, Palace were initially frustrated by visiting ‘keeper Jack Robinson.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the second half when Joel Drakes-Thomas won a penalty, which Benji Casey calmly converted. Substitute Stuart Oduro then struck twice in quick succession to seal victory.

The Fourth Round brought a challenging away trip to Newcastle United at Whitley Park. Palace again impressed, with David Angibeaud opening the scoring before Casey doubled the lead early in the second half.

When Newcastle threatened a response, Jack Mason produced an outstanding reaction save before Palace accelerated clear. Angibeaud added his second and Casey wrapped up a dominant 4–0 win.

A tougher test awaited in the last 16 against Category Three Stevenage. Palace struck twice midway through the first half as Oduro finished after a pass from Jasper Judd before Casey’s driven cross forced an own goal.

Stevenage pulled one back before half-time, ensuring a tense second period, but disciplined defending saw the young Eagles hold on for a 2–1 victory and a long-awaited quarter-final place!

### Palace’s proud FA Youth Cup legacy

Since its introduction in the 1952/53 season, the FA Youth Cup has remained one of the most prestigious competitions in English youth football.

The tournament mirrors the structure of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, with clubs across the football pyramid entering qualifying rounds before the professional academies join.

Palace famously lifted the trophy in back-to-back seasons in 1977 and 1978.

That golden generation featured the likes of Vince Hilaire, Kenny Sansom and Terry Fenwick – players who would later form the backbone of the club’s famous ‘Team of the Eighties’.

### Aston Villa U18s’ road to the Youth Cup final

Reigning champions Aston Villa began their title defence with a 4–1 victory over Doncaster Rovers at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Despite falling behind early, Villa responded impressively as goals from Bradley Burrowes (two), Max Jenner and Jack McGrath secured progression.

The Fourth Round saw Villa again come from behind to defeat Fleetwood Town 3–2 at Highbury Stadium, with Burrowes scoring twice and McGrath also on the scoresheet.

Villa then booked their quarter-final place with a narrow 1–0 win over Wrexham at Keys Park, Bradley Burrowes’ early goal proving decisive.

The forward’s strike – his fifth of the competition – ensured the holders progressed to a last-eight meeting with Palace.

### Villa’s history in the Youth Cup

Villa are one of the most successful clubs in FA Youth Cup history.

The Midlands side first lifted the trophy in 1972 with a 5–2 aggregate victory over Liverpool.

They added further titles in 1980, 2002 and 2021 before winning again last season with a 3–1 victory over Manchester City.

That triumph secured Villa’s fifth Youth Cup title and confirmed their reputation as one of the competition’s modern powerhouses.

Villa entered the season as reigning champions of the U18 Premier League South after winning the title in 2024/25.

This campaign has been more mixed. The Villans currently sit seventh in the division on 28 points, level with West Ham and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Midfielder Alfie Lynskey played a key role in Villa’s remarkable 2024/25 season, which saw the club win the U18 Premier League South, the FA Youth Cup and the Premier League National Final.

A product of the Villa Academy since the age of nine, the Republic of Ireland youth international signed his first professional contract in December 2024 before agreeing a new deal in January 2026.

The creative midfielder has also stepped up to Premier League 2 this season and has made appearances across both the Under-18 and Under-21 sides.

Up front, striker Markie Meade has emerged as one of Villa’s most dangerous attacking threats.

The forward scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner against Reading in Villa’s most recent league outing and currently has nine league goals and four assists this season.

Richard Beale returned to Aston Villa F.C. in the summer as the club’s Under-18 Lead Coach.
