Our guest speaker at the upcoming Business Club lunch, Matthew Hoggard MBE, is regarded as one of the country’s greatest ever fast bowlers, representing his country on 93 occasions.
Hoggard made his name in Yorkshire, being born and bred in Pudsey, Leeds and making his professional debut for the county in 1996 at the age of just 19. Within a few years his form gained international recognition, and aged 23 he made his first England appearance, working alongside Captain Nasser Hussain and coach Duncan Fletcher.
His international career went from strength to strength, and within no time he was playing crucial roles in victories and breaking records. Notable performances included taking seven wickets for 63 runs against New Zealand, and a hat-trick against the West Indies in 2004, one of only 34 of the kind at the time.
The peak of the bowler’s career arguably came in the 2005 Ashes series, when England regained the Urn for the first time in almost 20 years. Opening the bowling, Hoggard was a constant thorn in the Aussie’s side, taking 16 wickets as well as scoring a crucial 8* in the victory at Trent Bridge.
It was this performance that saw Hoggard included in the 2006 New Year’s Honours list and is the reason he is now referred to as Matthew Hoggard MBE.
Hoggard, who away from the cricket strip is a loving husband and father, is also known for his work in the media, with significant contributions to a number of publications, including the Independent, as well as releasing his own book ‘Hoggy: Welcome to my world’ in 2009. Not only is Hoggard in demand from national press and TV programmes because of his expertise and insight into top level sport but also for his hard work and humour.
Take your chance to hear from and meet Matthew Hoggard at Selhurst Park with tickets still available for the upcoming Business Club lunch on Thursday 19th September, between 11:30 – 3:00pm!
